SA vs Aus prediction – Stop whining start winning

Posted in South Africa, Sport, Weekly Stuff on July 23, 2010 by ribshackred

The record shows that the Boks are not playing well when they travel to Brisbane. But this has to change as poor defence and a heap of excuses has derailed the Tri-Nations campaign.

The press are having a field day with of the ball and of the field stuff. The coach’s misinterpreted comments, the team’s bully image and the crumbling (once impeccable) defence are stuff that must be addressed.

My quote for the game: In the movie The Rock with Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage, Connery says: “Losers always whine about their “best”! Winners go home and …” (something to do with the prom queen)…. ( Full quote ) .

So,  I say whatever it takes we must be winners again and play them of their feet. Stop whining and just dominate.

Rugby365 predicts a Springbok victory by more than 10 points.

My call is that  this is a bit brave. I say a ugly win for the Boks… by 5 or less points

T-Bone with Red Wine Mushroom Sauce- A cure for Bok blues

Posted in Braai, Braai Recipes, Sport, Wine, Wine and dine on July 19, 2010 by ribshackred

This weekend we were again crushed by the “Above the law McCaw’s men” but a new star was born as Louis Oosthuizen won the British Open at St Andrew’s and Jordy Smith become the world #1 surfer.

After the rugby I lit up my fire and contemplated of what happened to the Boks.

I was frustrated that we were outplayed and out reffed and when teams are evenly matched it doesn’t help if all the 50-50 calls go to the home side. This and the fact that you are carded then warned and Richie gets a dozen warnings, was leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

But then, in the middle of the winter on a lovely sunny day,  I threw some T-Bones on the coals and enjoyed a lovely braai with some of our friends. This eased the pain and cured my Bok blues and the steaks were fantastic.

So , although we were beaten in the rugby, our weather, people and braais makes it fantastic to be a South African and the Boks will rise again and we have a new major champion in Louis Oosthuizen.

Here is the T-Bone with Red wine mushroom sauce recipe

– 2 t-bone steaks
– 1 tbsp olive oil
– 1 tbsp flour
– 12 mushrooms sliced
– 1/4 cup red wine
– 1 clove garlic minced
– 1 tsp salt
– 1 tsp pepper
– 1 tsp celery salt

Braai the T-Bone steaks your way.

Finish the sauce before you braai and heat it up just as the steaks are ready.

The sauce:

Heat the olive oil in a skillet to medium high heat.

Add to the skillet the mushrooms, mushrooms, garlic, salt, pepper, celery salt, and red wine.  Add the flour to the mixture to thicken and serve the t-bone steaks immediately with the sauce on top.

SA vs NZ prediction – We need that Men in Black gadget

Posted in South Africa, Sport, Weekly Stuff on July 16, 2010 by ribshackred

After last week’s thrashing the Springboks is definitely not the favourites in tomorrow’s Tri-Nations test against The Men in Black. Maybe we need that “forget-it-happened” gadget from Will Smith and  Tommy Lee Jones in The Men in Black movies to recover and wipe-out the embarrassment of last week.

At least we do not have to watch Bakkies Botha performing some of his stupid and Neanderthalic outbursts.  But that is then and now we are facing the world’s best in their back yard, wounded  and fighting for survival in the Tri-Nations.

Can we do it? Yes of cause. Will we do it…not likely according to Rugby 365.

Their prediction is as follows:

“It’s hard to see the Springboks coming back well enough to win the match. It is silly to think that the All Blacks will suffer from overconfidence for that is not in the nature of the All Blacks. But Springboks with their backs to the wall are usually at their best. So we predict a New Zealand victory by about five points.

My call is if we are 15 against 15 for the whole match it is going to be close. But without Fourie (‘s a jolly good fellow) Du Preez and with no real enforcer (yster) on the bench, I think Rugby365 is spot on with SA to lose by five.

What is your prediction?

Paul the Octopus is safe as NZ Beef Sosaties got the nod

Posted in Braai, Braai Recipes, Sport on July 12, 2010 by ribshackred

This weekend I wanted to braai some Octopus as Paul the Octopus backed all the teams which I wanted to lose. But Paul is safe as I’m not too big on braaing seafood. On the other hand , Darren, the Boks were so bad that during half time I started to prepare my afternoon braai meat cause I had to do something to give me a valid reason not to watch the Eden Park Massacre.

So my weekend braai was a New Zealand style (nogal) Beef Sosatie

Recipe: Spiced Beef Kebabs (the NZ way)

  •  600g trimmed beef rump steak

  •  2 tsp each ground coriander and cumin
  •  1 tsp each paprika and garlic powder
  •  4 tsp wine vinegar
  •  2 Tbsp dark soy sauce 4 Tbsp oil

Cut the beef rump into generous cubes. Mix together all the marinade ingredients in a bowl and add the beef. Toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for 4 hours if possible.

Thread cubes onto metal skewers, packing the cubes close together. Season well with salt and pepper. (If using bamboo skewers, soak them in cold water for 30 minutes before threading the meat on.)

Braai over a high heat for 8-10 minutes, turning to brown all sides. Alternatively, grill in the oven for the same amount of time, turning regularly. Brush with any remaining marinade during cooking.

The ultimate match-up Springboks vs All Blacks – Any predictions?

Posted in South Africa, Sport on July 9, 2010 by ribshackred

All sports have the ultimate match-up and in Rugby it doesn’t get any bigger than the All Blacks vs The Springboks. This match is going to be awesome as it marks the start of the build up to next year’s Rugby World Cup.

Rugby365   indicates that it is a mad thing to attempt to predict the score. Either side could win it by a small margin and either side can run away with it. And so we gulp and say there will be a change in history and South Africa will win by three points.

My call is that the SA Super 14 teams did exceptionally well against the New Zealand teams and the invincibility of the All Blacks at home is a thing of the past. So my heart says South Africa will win narrowly

What to braai with the game? I’ll go for the Spanish Mini Ribs

Posted in Braai, Braai Recipes, Sport on July 7, 2010 by ribshackred

Tonight’s semi final between Spain and Germany is going to be a big clash. So what to braai? What about Spanish mini ribs they call it costillas which can be served as a tapas (snack) or if you braai enough you can make it you sit-down mail meal.

They say in Spain the serving of tapas is designed to encourage conversation because people are not so focused upon eating an entire meal that is set before them. It is also customary for diners to stand and move about while eating tapas.

You can eat it as you like. Sitting, standing, chatting …whatever.

The recipe : Spanish Mini Ribs
675g (1.5 lb) pork ribs
6 tablespoons sherry
1 tablespoon tomato purée (paste)
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 tablespoon flour

Mix the sherry, tomato purée, soy sauce, Tabasco and sugar in a bowl. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon salt. Put the flour in a plastic bag, then add the ribs and toss to coat. Dip each rib in the sauce. Cook on a hot barbecue (braai) for 30-40 minutes, turning occasionally until cooked and a little charred. Sprinkle with sea salt and serve.
